The joint partnership formed recently by Telstra and the Tasmanian Government provides free public Wi-Fi to the masses in popular and frequently visited sites in Tasmania, Australia.
In order to enlarge the Telstra Air network in Australia, a partnership has been formed between Telstra and the Tasmanian government to launch the Tasmanian Wi-Fi network which has since deployed over 40 public hotspots throughout Tasmania. This network was designed to provide a service for free public Wi-Fi in 47 location across Tasmania. Currently, only ⅓ of the total 150 Wi-Fi hotspots have been provisioned, in locations frequented by both tourists and residents, such as council parks, civic spaces, Telstra payphones, airports and other commercial sites, to name a few.
The Tasmanian Wi-Fi network has been in motion since December of 2015 and has since registered the consumption of approximately two terabytes of data. The availability of free Wi-Fi has become increasingly popular in Tasmania, and with the help of this new network, the plan is to enhance the interaction between tourists visiting Australia and locals. Although the Wi-Fi hotspots have a time restriction of 20 minutes per device per day for free, the sessions will not have a data limit.
