The Filipino Government is changing its educational system and launching a “K to 12 Basic Education Program” that implements a tablet-based learning system at schools.
The President of the Philippines Benigno Aquino stated in his speech of April 2012, that the Filipino Government is launching a “K to 12 Basic Education Program” in order to implement the tablet-based learning system at schools. This program has not yet begun but Filipino organizations, companies, and publishing houses express full support to this initiative.
The idea of replacing textbooks with tablets for educational purposes has become an issue of ongoing discussion in the Philippines. On one side, tablet proponents suggest that the devices are lighter than books and store more data. Those on the opposing side, claim that tablets are likely to serve as a distraction for students and also emphasize on the fact that some teachers may not be capable of keeping up with a tablet-based learning. However, President Aquino addressed by stating during his speech that a proper training will be provided for teachers so they could familiarize themselves with tablet-based learning methods. Furthermore, the initiative gained support from publishing houses, like Vibal Publishing house, which in cooperation with Microsoft Corporation introduced low-cost tablet models and plans on running open-source educational applications.
The implementation process of tablets can be easily achieved by purchasing tablets and educational software. As digital devices require Wi-Fi connectivity, setting up a Wi-Fi would also be necessary. IT companies like Tanaza, offer an affordable cloud-based software to easily manage a Wi-Fi connection, compatible with many devices. There are many advantages to having a Wi-Fi connection at school, such as having a fast and secure connection throughout the day, within the school grounds, available on multiple devices, and most importantly, the wireless networks can enable communication between staff and students inside and outside of the building.
Encouraging innovative learning with a reliable wireless connection will result in a more flexible, engaging and up-to-date educational environment. Though the debate is still on-going, the final decision of implementing tablet-based learning in K-12 classrooms in the Philippines will be set in motion soon.
