Protecting Wi-Fi Network Security is very important nowadays, as many hackers are gathering personal data illegally for fraudulent purposes.
Below we provide you with a few useful tips for protecting your Wi-Fi network security:
- Change the default login
Routers come with default SSID names and standard administrator passwords that are usually printed on the devices themselves. When setting up the network, it is very important that you give your SSID an easily recognizable name and a solid WPA2 password. Never select a weak password (such as your name with a birthday or your spouse’s name and surname), or a common password (such as “1234” or “Password123”).Try not make your password too complicated and rather think of something that is not easy for a stranger to guess. If you want other people to connect, create separate guest networks with separate SSIDs and passwords. This way you can prevent others accessing your main network and the computers connected to it.
- Regularly update firmware
Keeping firmware up to date is vital for securing the router. Vendors periodically update router associated software to fix problems and defeat viruses or other threats. For this reason, you should check the upgrades from time to time and keep your device and software updated.
- Disabling SSID broadcasting and MAC filtering are not security measures
Disabling SSID broadcasting and MAC filtering should not be sole security measures. When disabling SSID broadcasting you are not necessarily preventing hackers from finding your Wi-Fi network. Furthermore, disabling SSID broadcasting might cause connectivity problems as some systems only function when APs have SSID broadcasting enabled. MAC address filtering is not hack-proof, as it is easy to spoof and the filters can cause various connectivity problems.
- Enable the Firewall
Protecting your network from unauthorized access is possible by enabling the firewall in the router. By doing so the firewall will control the incoming and outgoing network traffic and determine which traffic is allowed through and which is not. Enabling a firewall will also prevent others on the Internet from connecting to local network services on your computer and control access to network services from other computers. We advise that you keep your firewall, antivirus and web browser up to date.By taking into consideration the aforementioned tips, the overall security of your wireless network will highly improve.
